Dr. Jay Battacharya, a former tenured professor at Stanford University is stepping down from his role as acting leader of the CDC. In Dr. Battacharya’s place, President Trump has nominated Dr. Erica Schwartz to serve as his replacement- the fourth leader of the CDC in a year. Although Dr. Schwartz has not yet been confirmed, many believe that she possesses the qualifications necessary and will be swiftly confirmed. Dr. Schwartz has become well-versed in a variety of fields: she graduated from Brown University’s PMLE program, earned a Master’s degree in Public Health, received a Juris Doctorate, and completed her residency in both environmental and occupational medicine. Additionally, Dr. Schwartz has served as a US Coast Guard Officer, an admiral in the Commission Corps of the U.S. Public Health Service, and the Deputy Surgeon General of the United States. Although some people have mixed opinions, and one critic commented online that Dr. Schwartz’s appointment is “a slap in the face to the medical freedom that gave Trump the presidency”, a doctor remarked to the New York Times that Dr. Schwartz is “calm, practical, and deeply focused on data and people….the qualities C.D.C. leadership needs right now”. Since the Senate has not yet confirmed Dr. Schwartz as leader of the CDC, I will be sure to keep you updated on her confirmation status, and if selected, how she transforms the CDC.
